BRIDEG INSPECTION ENGINEERS - LEVELS 1, 2, 3. Each Description Follows Below
------POSITION DESCRIPTION: BRIDGE INSPECTION ENGINEER I (Entry Level)--------
FUNCTION
This position assists with the various inspections of in-service bridges and culverts for cities, counties, villages, and MDOT. Inspections include but are not limited to routine safety inspections, in-depth inspections, detailed inspections, fracture critical inspections, fatigue sensitive inspections, scour inspections, etc. The position requires a solid understanding of structural engineering concepts related to the operation of bridges and culverts of various material types and design types. This position also assists with load rating calculations on in-service bridges and culverts.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with bridge inspection fieldwork including:
o Identifying, measuring, and quantifying deterioration on various material types
o Field documentation including notes, drawings, and photos.
- Assist with report preparation including:
o Preparation of photo logs
o Drafting various bridge inspection reports
- Assist with obtaining permits necessary to perform fieldwork.
- Assist with load rating calculations including preparation of hand calculations and load rating models.
- Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whenever working conditions require safety equipment.
- Willingness to work at heights up to 100 ft., in and around flowing water, work from various watercrafts, work around heavy traffic volumes.
- Willingness to work extended hours, including possible nights and weekends, depending on project demands.
- Able to work outdoors in Michigan year-round.
- Able to learn how to operate a bucket truck with vertical reach up to 45 ft.
- Use various hand tools including chipping hammers, measuring tools, and NDT equipment.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Ability to learn and understand FHWA, AASHTO, and MDOT bridge inspection standards and specifications.
- Ability to successfully complete NHI Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges class
- Proficient with AASHTOWare BrR software, Mathcad, and MDOT MiBRIDGE application is desired but not required.
REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of valid driver’s license with good driving record.
- Ability to obtain Michigan chauffeur’s license and pass DOT physical within 12 months of employment.

FUNCTION
This position assists with various inspections of in-service bridges and culverts for cities, counties, villages, and MDOT. Inspections include but are not limited to routine safety inspections, in-depth inspections, detailed inspections, fracture critical inspections, fatigue sensitive inspections, scour inspections, etc. The position requires a solid understanding of structural engineering concepts related to the operation of bridges and culverts of various material types and design types. This position also assists with load rating hand calculations and models on in-service bridges and culverts. Ability to work independently and complete assigned inspections within set timeframes.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform routine bridge safety inspections as a Qualified Team Leader (QTL) within the State of Michigan.
- Assist and/or lead with bridge inspection fieldwork including:
o Identifying, measuring, and quantifying deterioration on various material types
o Field documentation including notes, drawings, and photos.
- Assist and/or lead with report preparation including:
o Preparation of photo logs
o Drafting various bridge inspection reports, including but not limited to bridge scoping, in-depth inspections, detailed inspections, fracture critical inspections, scour inspections, etc.
- Assist and/or lead with obtaining permits necessary to perform fieldwork.
- Assist with scheduling field dates including coordination with entities not limited to traffic control contractors, MDOT Reach-All, railroad flagging, etc.
- Assist with load rating calculations including preparation of hand calculations and load rating models.
- Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whenever working conditions require safety equipment.
- Willingness to work at heights up to 100 ft., in and around flowing water, work from various watercrafts, work around heavy traffic volumes.

------------POSITION DESCRIPTION: BRIDGE INSPECTION ENGINEER III------------
FUNCTION
This position leads various bridge inspection projects for cities, counties, villages, and MDOT. Inspections include but are not limited to bridge scoping, routine safety inspections, in-depth inspections, detailed inspections, fracture critical inspections, fatigue sensitive inspections, scour inspections, etc. The position requires a strong understanding of structural engineering concepts related to the operation of bridges and culverts of various material types and design types. This position leads the overseeing of load rating capacity calculations and models for in-service bridges and culverts and assists with the preparation of contract proposals. Ability to work as team leader, team member, and independently complete assigned inspections within set timeframes. Maintain working relationships with clients.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform routine bridge inspections as a Qualified Team Leader (QTL) within the State of Michigan.
- Assist with the preparation of proposals.
- Lead an inspection team in bridge inspection fieldwork including:
o Identifying, measuring, and quantifying deterioration on various material types
o Field documentation including notes, drawings, and photos
- Lead an inspection team in bridge report preparation including:
o Preparation of photo logs
o Drafting various bridge inspection reports, including but not limited to bridge scoping, in-depth inspections, detailed inspections, fracture critical inspections, scour inspections, etc.
- Assist with marketing activities related to MDOT, Municipal, and other clients.
- Assist with department management activities.
- Lead the process of obtaining permits necessary to perform fieldwork.
- Schedule and coordinate field work including coordination with entities that may include traffic control contractors, MDOT Reach-All, railroads.
- Work independently in the preparation of load rating models.
- Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whenever working conditions require safety equipment.
- Willingness to work at heights up to 100 ft., in and around flowing water, work from various watercrafts, work around heavy traffic volumes.
- Willingness to work extended hours, including possible nights and weekends, depending on project demands.
- Able to work outdoors in Michigan year-round.

- Extensive understanding in FHWA, AASHTO, and MDOT bridge inspection standards and specifications
- Proficiency with AASHTOWare BrR software, Mathcad, and MDOT MiBRIDGE application is desired but not required.
