The interview process was pretty standard. Applied online and got an email from one of the EAs asking for my availability for a phone screen.
Set up a time to interview, about 10 minutes pass from the scheduled time and sent and email to the EA to see if we're still on track. She emailed me back saying that she tried to reach out but my number wait straight to voicemail. Weird, I was literally staring at my phone and even made a test call to ensure it was working.
Got a voicemail from the EA and a number. Emailed the EA back saying if this happens again at the rescheduled time, can I call this number? She agreed and we picked a date the following week for the phone screen.
Day of the rescheduled phone screen, 5 minutes pass before I get a ring from a number I don't recognize. I pick up the call and its the EA. She informed me that she tried dialing my phone number on their conference phone and it was working so she called me on her personal cell and it works. Awkwardness aside we proceed with a brief introduction of my current position and what responsibility I hold.
The interview took a weird turn. It started with us understanding the types of requests as Admins face, then she begins to explain the team dynamic at Segment. I didn't mind that she was providing some insight to what the company was like but it wasn't at all an interview. She didn't ask me any questions at all on my current role or past experience, she didn't even ask if I did research about the company, didn't even leave time for me at the end of the call before abruptly stopping the conversation. Asked me salary requirements and said she had to leave.
About a week goes by and sent a follow Thank You email to the EA. She replied back that they were moving in a different direction. I totally understand their decision to not move forward. After the phone screen, I'm happy we didn't. But the fact that the reason for the missed opportunities was because it was THEIR technical difficulty plus not asking the right questions to gauge a candidates strength and qualifications.
Advice for a future candidate, don't schedule back to back meetings if you're serious about hiring someone for your team. Things can happen and its frustrating when you're trying to have a conversation about a potential opportunity and you just don't have the time.
Also call your phone vendor, would suck for this to happen to another candidate. Or if your executive we're trying to call someone important and missed the opportunity.
